Recording damage to the environment of your community in Ukraine

Last updated on September 18, 2024

How to act and where to write if the Russian war in Ukraine caused damage to the environment of your community, enterprise, environmental protection institution, etc.? It "flew" to you - a drone, a rocket, explosive objects caused a fire, the destruction, which is embodied in the pollution of air, soil, water, and indirectly plants, has harmful consequences for people and animals.

You will do the right thing if you take a number of steps to assess the damage to the environment in order to: subsequently bring the aggressor to justice, compensate for the damage and justify the recovery measures.

First of all, you need to contact the closest to you State Environmental Inspection and to Special Environmental Prosecutor's Office, as well as to specialized laboratories that analyze samples of materials (soil, water, air, biological materials, etc.) for evidence of environmental damage.

Our database includes 199 laboratories in various regions of Ukraine. For your convenience, it is presented in map and list formats.

Some technical notes on the list of laboratories:

  • The entry in our database "biological materials" is entered if it is in this wording in the description of the laboratory's services.
  • There are three laboratories of the State Institution "Institute of Hygiene and Medical Ecology named after O. M. Marzeeva of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine", each with its own specialization.
  • A crossed-out element of the biosphere means that we either did not find such a service in the list of those provided, or this list does not directly indicate the provision of such a service. Although in reality it can be disguised, for example, by the phrase "measurement of physical parameters and factors of objects of the external environment". That is, atmospheric air can be understood under these objects, for example, although the words "atmospheric air" may not be in the description of services.
  • We did not specify which kind of water analysis - drinking water or from open water - the laboratory does, although it is indicated in some places in the description of services.By and large, after the crimes committed by the Russian Federation, all the same substances can get into water pipes as into open bodies of water. Especially if the water supply networks are worn out, if due to interruptions in the electricity supply, the water pressure in them drops from time to time and the penetration of contaminated groundwater into the water supply occurs. It is possible that some institutions, when noting the possibility of analyzing "drinking water", really mean bottled water. But in each case it should be clarified.
  • Regarding the analysis of air quality, we did not include in the database those institutions that evaluate indoor air quality.
